William (Bill) Barry Wernet, 92, of Pinehurst, NC, formerly of Ashland, Massachusetts, died peacefully on December 31, 2016 at FirstHealth Hospice House. Bill was born in Muncie Indiana to the late Norman Lewis Wernet, Sr. and Mildred Elizabeth O'Meara Wernet. He was the husband of the late Ceslava (Pieloch) Wernet who died in 2007.
Bill was part of the great generation that served his country in the US Army Medical Service during WW II, stationed at the Cushing General Hospital in Framingham Massachusetts. Honorably discharged, Bill continued to serve his country as a cardio technician with the Boston Veterans Administration Hospital until his retirement. He was married for 62 years to Ceslava (Tess) Wernet, who predeceased him in 2007. Bill was a long-time resident of Ashland, Massachusetts and a member of St Cecilia's Parish. He moved to Pinehurst, NC in 2005 to be near family. He continued his membership in the Knights of Columbus as a member of the Sacred Heart Parish.
His daughter, Theresa M. Smith, and his four brothers John, Norman, Robert and Howard also preceded Bill in death.
He is survived by his daughter Mildred W. Boyd and her husband Kenneth, of Pinehurst; son, Stephen P. Wernet and wife, Sandra, of Tomball, Texas; seven grandchildren; and nine-great grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, January 17, at St. Cecilia's Church, Ashland. Burial will be held in Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland.
A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday January 16, at Matarese Funeral Home in Ashland.
