Steven George Zanella, 71, of Ashland passed away Sunday March 4th surrounded by his family at home. Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late Francis and Elizabeth "Betty" (Littlefield) Zanella. Steve served the Town of Ashland for 42 years as a police officer. He worked as the juvenile officer in Ashland for many years and retired in 2012 with the rank of Sergeant. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by five children; Patrick Zanella and his wife Tara of Northbridge; Steven Zanella and his wife Deanna of Dunbarton, NH; Anthony Zanella and his wife Brittany of Ashland; Laurie Ferraro and her husband Tyler of Ashland; and Brendon Curtis of Ashland; ten grandchildren; Marissa, Kylie, Lilianne, Noah, Camden, Angelina, Gavin, Saverio, Tyler, and Alexia; one brother, Gene Zanella and his wife Margaret of Georgia, two sisters, Diane Smith of Ashland, and Kathy Saraceno and her husband Michael of Franklin, and his former wife, Louise Zanella of Ashland.

A funeral service will be held Saturday March 10th at 10:00am in the Federated Church of Ashland, 118 Main St. Ashland, MA. Calling hours will be held Friday from 3:00-7:00 PM in the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. Ashland, MA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Steve's name to the Ashland Police Association, 137 Main St. Ashland, MA 01721 for a scholarship to be created in his name.

Service Information

There is no public gathering or visiting hour at the funeral home Saturday morning. Please go directly to the Federated Church of Ashland for the service at 10:00am.  Please observe the reserved seating signs posted in the church sanctuary.

Parking for the Federated Church is located behind the Town Hall on Main Street as well as the Town Lot located on Front Street. The small parking area to the side of the church is reserved for handicap plates only .
