Sherrill B. Hart, 83, an Ashland resident for 52 years, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007. He was the husband of Mabel E. (Arbour) Hart. Son of the late Robert L. and Florence E. (Crocker) Hart, he grew up in Framingham and graduated from Framingham High School in 1942. He served in World War II in the U.S. Coast Guard on the cutter Campbell and USS (PF-32) Woonsocket in the North Atlantic on submarine patrol, as a radio operator and postmaster. He earned the American Veterans Medal, North Atlantic Patrol Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Marksman's Badge. One of six sailors from the same family who all served before, during and after the war, Mr. Hart was discharged from Brighton Marine Hospital and the service on Aug. 30, 1945. He served as secretary of Local 1104 of the Pleasantville, N.J., shipyard from 1946 to 1948. In 1946 he served on the committee in Framingham to secure Camp Framingham and turn it into affordable housing for returning veterans. He was present on Feb. 11, 1946, when Gov. Maurice Tobin signed the legislative directive turning Camp Framingham over to the Framingham veteran groups. He worked for General Motors Corp. in Framingham in the seat cushion and inspection departments, retiring after 37 years. At GM, he helped to organize the UAW union and UAW Credit Union where he was on the board of directors, served as loan officer, and was appointed the first Judge Advocate and Fair Housing Chairman for UAW. After his retirement he worked at Middlesex News and for Accept Transportation, driving special needs children to school in Framingham. An avid bowler, he served as president and secretary of the UAW Bowling Team that won many town tournaments. He was past president of the Grace Church Bowling League and of the Ashland Lions Club, which honored him with the Lions International's highest award, The Melvin Jones Humanitarian Award. A life member of the Lions Club International and of VFW Post 2331 Ashland, he served as longtime member of the American Legion of both Ashland and Damariscotta, Maine, was a life member of the Patrol Frigate Reunion Committee, and served on the committee for World War II veterans. He was a life member of DAV, and a 36-year member of the National Geographic Society where he served on the advisory committee from 1980 to 1981. Co-founder of Ashland Day, he served on its committee for 10 years and was a past secretary. A member of the election committee since 1994, he was warden of Precinct 1 since 1995. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Sharon (Hart) Reed of Holliston and Sandra (Hart) Moore of Tolland, Conn.; his grandchildren, Brandon and Adam Moore, and Bethany (Moore) Hiller of Tolland, and Laura and Bradley Reed of Holliston; his brothers, Robert of Holliston, Edward of Ashland, Donald of Southborough, Eugene of Damariscotta; his sister, Marylyn Bartiese of Boothbay, Maine; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late William Hart of Ellsworth, Maine, and Frances Heeman-Breyer of Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Funeral services are private. Visiting hours are Thursday, Sept. 27, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St., Ashland.
