Obituary

Scooch Giargiari, 80, of Ashland, passed away at his home on Friday, January 6th, surrounded by his loving family.  He was the husband of Claire (Curran) Giargiari for 55 years.  A life-long Ashland resident, Scooch was the son of the late Hugo and Helen (Dancause) Giargiari.

Scooch was well known in the community for his coaching of baseball and football. His career started in the 1960's at Marian High School where he taught Social Studies and History and became the Athletic Director/Coach of Marian's baseball and football team.  In the 70's Scooch transferred to Keefe Technical School where he taught history and coached the Keefe Tech baseball team.  He would also coach the Ashland High School football team during the 1970's achieving a perfect record in 1977.  He later went on to coach the Framingham South High football team.

When Scooch retired from teaching he became a financial planner, founding Compass Financial Services. He served on the Ashland School Committee and Keefe School Committee.  Recognized for his long career in coaching, Scooch was inducted into the Massachusetts Coaching Hall of Fame in 1991 and in November 2016 was inducted into the Ashland High Athletic Hall of Fame.

Along with his wife Claire, Scooch is survived by his daughter Michelle Nigro and son Michael and his wife Lisa, all of Ashland; his grandchildren, Paul and Alexandra Nigro and Matthew and Laura Giargiari. The oldest of eight children, Scooch is survived by his brothers, Edward of Hampton, NH, Lawrence of Dennis, Robert of Natick, Philip of Ashland and his sisters, Rita Ghilani of Ashland, Linda Carney of Medfield, and Helen Pimentel of Northbridge. He was a friend to all those who knew him and will be greatly missed by his wide circle of extended family and friends.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 9 AM in St. Cecilia's Church, 54 Esty Street, Ashland. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 3-7 PM at the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main Street, Ashland, MA  01721.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Scooch's name may be made to the Salvation Army, 45 Concord Street, Framingham, MA 01702
