Robert Mark
Weisman
Dec 31, 1953 — Oct 2, 2018
Ashland
Robert Mark Weisman, an award-winning photographer, photojournalist, graphic designer, and world traveler, passed away peacefully on October 2nd, surrounded by family in his own home. He was 64 years young.
For the past 5 years, Rob fought a courageous battle against oropharyngeal cancer. His family is incredibly grateful for the dedicated efforts of his care team, both at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, led by Dr. Glenn Hanna, and at Metrowest Medical Center, lead by Dr. Zachary Spiegelman and Dr. Kala Seetheraman. Because of their work, and due in no small part to Rob's tenacity, grit, and fighting spirit, he was given the gift of several years of good health after his diagnosis which allowed him to become a grandfather to Emilia (who was the new love of his life) see the world (including Hawaii, Slovakia, Tanzania, Hungary, Austria, Zanzibar, France, the Czech Republic, and Germany), and spend more time developing his remarkable photography business.
Rob was an accomplished photojournalist who had previously worked at both the Metrowest Daily News (then the Middlesex News) and the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. He was also an exceptional photographer who in later years started his own business, Rob Weisman Photography, and was most recently recognized as one of only a handful of winners of the 2018 National Geographic Travel Photographer of the Year - People's Choice category.
More importantly, Rob was a kind, gentle, unassuming soul who touched many lives with his love, quiet support, and dry wit. He was always ready with a joke, even if his sense of humor often snuck past people at first listen. He was unfailingly dependable, and would happily sacrifice his own plans if family or friends needed him — just ask his "grand-dog" Chestnut, who was 'saved' by Rob at the last minute from many mid-afternoon thunderstorms! He was also philanthropic and generous, donating his time and his work to many great causes including organizations as varied as the Ashland High School Theatrical Society and The Foundation for Photo/Art in Hospitals. He has gifted photos to -- among others -- Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center, and The Cancer Care Center at Metrowest Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife Susan (Casavant) Weisman of Ashland, his son, Ross and his wife Renee of Framingham, and his two-year-old granddaughter Emilia, who lovingly called him "Pa". He will also be dearly remembered by his brothers-in-law Leo Audette and Barry Wakefield, sisters-in-law Judith Audette and Linda Wakefield, nephews Matt, Mike, and Nathan, niece Heather, his dear friend, Roy Zappia, his brother, Eric, cousins, and all those others who have had the good fortune of meeting him along the way.
A celebration of his life will be held Tue. Oct. 9th at 10:00am in the Chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. Ashland, MA. Calling hours will be held Monday from 4:00-7:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ashland Emergency Fund PO Box 112, Ashland, MA 01721, or to the Metrowest Humane Society, 30 Pond Street, Ashland, MA 01721, who supplied the Weisman household with many wonderful furry companions and much joy over the years.
