Richard E. Going, 89, passed away on October 11, 2014 after a long illness. He was born in Cambridge, the son of Percy & Elizabeth (Downer) Going. He grew up in Auburndale, graduated from Newton Trade School and took classes at MIT. Richard attended Beth Eden Baptist Church in Waltham where he met his future wife, Olive Williams, who passed away in January, 2012. They worked with, and traveled with the young people of the church for many years. Richard was a Life Scout and later formed the first Boy Scout troop at the Fernald School in Waltham. He worked for Raytheon and Duralectra in Natick as a chemist. While living the remainder of his life in Ashland, Richard was active in Civil Defense and the police department. His many nieces and nephews will always remember the wooden toys he made for them as well as furniture and life size Christmas decorations. Richard enjoyed his model trains. Richard and Olive traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Alaska, and Bermuda. Music and dancing brought him great joy, as did all the dogs he had throughout his youth. The family sincerely thanks Nana Bonsu, his devoted caregiver, who cared for him day in and day out for the last few years. Richard leaves his sister, Eleanor E. Simmons and husband Richard of Oakham, his sister Jean Jones and husband Bradley of North Reading. He also leaves his beloved nieces and nephews and their children; Janet Paradis and husband George of Oakham, LeeAnn Nelson and husband Richard of Sanford, North Carolina, Richard A. Simmons and wife Deborah of West Brookfield, Nancy Larence and husband Roger of Northbridge , Matthew Simmons and wife Beth of Brookfield, Warren McDonald III of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Michael McDonald and wife Margaret of Niceville, Florida, Mark McDonald and wife Sharon of Amherst, Massachusetts, also Gary and David Williams who reside in New Hampshire. Richard was predeceased by his brother, Warren J. McDonald Jr. of Charleston, South Carolina. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 17th at 11am in the chapel at the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main Street in Ashland with one calling hour held prior to the service.
