Obituary

Richard Flaherty Jr., 55, of Ashland, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 26th.  He was the son of Judy (Player) Flaherty and the late Richard "Flash" Flaherty. Rich was the beloved husband and best friend of Stacie (Dumont) Flaherty.

A graduate of Ashland High School, Class of 1987, and UMass Lowell, Class of 1991, Rich dedicated 33 years to Clean Harbors, where he began his career as a field chemist in 1992. His dedication and leadership were evident in every role he held, most recently as Senior Vice President of Administration. Rich's commitment and contributions were recognized with numerous accolades, including the coveted Chairman's Choice Award.

Rich was a true sports fanatic — a loyal Patriots season ticket holder and an avid fan of college football and wrestling. A standout wrestler in high school himself, he loved nothing more than cheering on his own son from the stands.  He was well known by the wrestling families for for his passionate coaching from the stands with the infamous "cross face hard!"  His enthusiasm didn't stop at the mat — he especially enjoyed talking strategy and swapping stories with the coaches and other parents.

Beyond sports, Rich's love for life shone through in music and laughter. He was known for his unforgettable dance moves and karaoke performances at weddings and parties — whether belting out "Kung Fu Fighting," jumping to "Mac Dad will make you Jump Jump," or serenading with "Oh Sherrie." He loved 70s and 80s music and recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of his favorite movie, Jaws.

His quick wit, sarcastic sense of humor, and playful spirit brought so much joy to those around him. Friends and family will always remember his colorful expressions — he famously swapped out certain words for his own twist, saying "Mother Father" instead of the real thing, a classic Richism that never failed to get a laugh and keep things just a little cleaner.

Rich's deep faith and unwavering devotion to his family were at the heart of who he was. In addition to his wife and mother he is survived by his three cherished children: Alison, Jack, and Erin Flaherty, his brother Sean and his wife Kathy, and their children Brendan, Kaitlin, and Meaghan. He will be deeply missed by his in-laws, Joe and Lucille Dumont, and by his many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends.

Rich will be remembered for his big heart, larger-than-life personality, and the countless memories he created with all who knew him. His legacy of love, laughter, and dedication lives on through his family, friends, and all the lives he touched.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 2nd at 10:00 AM at St. Cecilia's Church, 54 Esty St., Ashland, with burial to follow at Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 3:00–7:00 PM at Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St., Ashland.
