Obituary

Paul F. MacArthur, 91, of Westborough, former longtime resident of Ashland, passed away Monday, April 21st after a period of declining health. He was the son of the late Frederick and Molly (Nagle) MacArthur and husband to the late Janice (Gillespie) MacArthur who died in 2005. Paul was raised in Medford and Burlington and was a graduate of Burlington High School, Boston College, and Framingham State College. He worked in the Wayland School System for 29 years, most recently as a special education teacher, retiring in 1989. He later worked for Ralph S. Osmond Construction Co. of Wayland.  Paul served his country honorably in the Air Force from 1953-1956.

Mr. MacArthur is survived by two daughters, Lauren MacArthur of Milford, and Lynne Atkinson and her husband Michael of Westborough, and three grandchildren, Maegan Montenegro and Nicole and Jennifer Atkinson. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Lila MacArthur of Oviedo, FL and Susan Doyle (John) of West Roxbury, and brother-in-law Richard W. Gillespie, Jr. of Humarock. He also leaves his cherished friends Andrew and Jane Abu of Southboro who were like a son and daughter to him.

Paul also leaves behind his beloved nieces Jennifer and Haleigh Kirwan, Leila MacArthur, Freda Lee, Kerri Doyle, and loving nephew, John P. Doyle.

He was predeceased by his sister Virginia M. Hassam (Gene), brother Fred W. MacArthur, Jr., niece and Goddaughter Paula Hassam, infant niece Laurie Hassam, niece Pamela Betson, and nephew Tony Gillespie.

Paul's family wishes to thank the kind and caring staff of Whitney Suites at The Willows of Westborough and the Rose Monahan Hospice Home of Worcester.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Fri. April 25 at 11:00am in St. Cecilia Parish, 54 Esty St. Ashland with burial to follow in Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland. Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 4:00-7:00pm in the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. Ashland, MA.
