Obituary

MCKNIGHT, Orren B. Jr. (O.B.) Orren B. McKnight, 85, of Holden, MA, passed away peacefully on Sept. 15th, in Shrewsbury, MA, under the loving care of his family, the staff at the Shrewsbury Nursing Home and JHC Hospice. He is survived by his cherished wife of 62 years, Ann Clay McKnight, their four children, eight grand-children, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Orren B. McKnight Sr. and Doris W. McKnight of West Newbury, MA and his twin sister Cynthia (Sis) Oliver. O.B. was born, March 4, 1930 in Haverhill, MA, graduated from Haverhill H.S. in 1947 and entered the US Army where he was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division at Camp Hood. He thereafter was assigned to the Volunteer Reserves and attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), where he played lacrosse and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1953, the same year he married Ann. Upon graduating from WPI, O.B. worked for Remington Arms from 1953 to 1956 before joining the Heald Division of Cincinnati Milacron. He worked for Heald in Worcester, Royal Oak, MI and Grand Rapids, MI, before returning to Worcester in 1967 and taking up residence in Holden. He retired as a Sales Executive retired in 1988 after 32 years. In addition to raising a family, he was involved in church related activities and teaching Statics and Dynamics on a part-time basis at Worcester Junior College and Central New England College. He loved hockey and spent weekends for 15 years as a hockey referee in the greater Worcester area. Post retirement, O.B. taught various courses such as dynamics, kinematics, physics, geometry, robotics, engineering graphics, drafting, mathematics and tool design at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI. and also physics and general science at Auburn High School. O.B. enjoyed being active in community and civic related activities in Holden where he served the community as Chairman of the Planning Board, President of the Holden Little League baseball program, President of the Chaffins Mens Club, Treasurer of the Wachusett Boosters Club as well as a Sunday school teacher at St. John's Episcopal Church and a member of the church vestry He was a devoted alumnus of WPI and spent much time helping to organize various class reunions and fundraising efforts. He could be found playing golf with friends, most any day post retirement. Close to his heart was Loon Lake in Plymouth, NH, where he spent his summers growing up at Camp Orinoke, a boys camp owned by his parents. He met Ann in Plymouth during the summer of 1950, and courted her on Loon Lake where Ann's family also had a camp. Tuckerman's Ravine was a favorite place of his for many years, hiking up and skiing the Headwall with his buddies, enjoying the exhilarating spring skiing runs. O.B. and Ann's greatest accomplishment of their 62-year marriage was raising a family. His four children and their spouses; Bruce McKnight and his wife Claire of Livingston, MT; Susan Kramer and her husband Frederick Kramer of Ashland; Sally McKnight and her husband Mark Berthiaume of Franklin and Michael McKnight and his wife Michelle of Wrentham. His eight grandchildren are Matthew and Kirsten McKnight , Lauren Maregni, Jeff Kramer, Katie, Michael and Sara Berthiaume and Daniel McKnight. His two great-grandchildren are Walker C. McKnight and Sophia J. McKnight. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, Oct. 24th at 11:00am in the Chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. in Ashland. Calling hours will be held 9:00-11:00 am prior to the service.
