Milton J. Morrisette, a long time resident of Ashland, died Wednesday evening, January 6, at the age of 90. The 11th of 13 children born to Adelard and Marie (Cote) Morrissette of Exeter, New Hampshire, Milton moved to Salisbury with his family at the age of seven. He was educated in the Amesbury school system and subsequently received degrees in engineering from Wentworth Institute and Northeastern University. In 1948, he married Shirley Gates of Ashland and built a house out of an old barn on High Street. There the couple raised their three children, Lee, Jim, and Russell. He was employed as a mechanical engineer at nearby Fenwal, Inc. for forty years and during that time was awarded six patents. When World War II broke out Milton volunteered for the Army Air Corps. As a navigator with the 351st bomber squadron, he flew 32 missions in enemy air space and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and other medals for meritorious service. For many years afterwards he attended reunions with surviving members of his squadron and ended every conversation with the phrase "over and out." An avid gardener, chef, golfer, and Red Sox fan who loved to entertain, he was also known for his humor and his willingness to help neighbors with their construction projects. His flower and vegetable garden was recently included on a tour organized by the Ashland Garden Club. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Shirley; a daughter, Lee Hartmann of Danvers; two sons, Jim Morrisette of Framingham and Russell Morrisette of Holliston and Russell's wife Alyse; a sister, Rita Dean of Kennebunk, Maine; two grandchildren, Adam Hartmann and Emily Morrisette; and numerous nieces, nephews, and good friends. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Ashland Emergency Fund, P.O. Box 112, Ashland, MA 01721. Visiting Hours will be Sunday, January 10, 2010 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm at Matarese Funeral Home 325 Main Street Ashland, Mass.
