Maureen Elizabeth
Phipps
Apr 6, 1934 — Aug 23, 2024
Framingham
Maureen Elizabeth (Doran) Phipps, a native and lifelong resident of Framingham, died peacefully on Friday, August 23, 2024. She was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth (McLaughlin) Doran of Southborough and Thomas F. Doran of Framingham. She was married to Alan M. Phipps, of Ashland, for 59 years until his passing in 2016.
She leaves four children: Mary Elizabeth Phipps of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Kate Phipps Fitzpatrick and her husband Paul of Holliston; Daniel Phipps and his wife Deena of Framingham; and Michael Phipps of Boulder, Colorado. She also leaves two grandchildren: Molly Fitzpatrick of Medfield, and Colleen Taylor and her husband Michael of Houston, as well as her great-grandson, Theodore Kean of Medfield.
Born in Framingham in 1934, Maureen attended St. Stephen's School and graduated from Framingham High School in 1951. She graduated from Framingham State College in 1955 with a BS in elementary education, receiving a scholarship for graduate study at the Harvard School of Education. She earned a Master's degree in education from Boston College in 1970, and a second Master's in religious education, also from Boston College, in 1987. A lifelong devout Catholic, Maureen's academic and professional careers were marked by a commitment to education and faith. She taught in several public schools, including the Hemenway School, until beginning a new career as a Director of Religious Education, first at St. Stephen Parish from 1974 to 1986 and then at St. Jeremiah Parish until her retirement in 1995. Maureen was an avid reader and a diligent if not always successful solver of crossword puzzles. She loved music and for decades she and her husband Alan had reserved seats at Boston's Symphony Hall. A committed Democrat, for many years she was a member of Framingham's Town Meeting, and she followed national and world affairs closely, reading several newspapers every day. She loved to travel and did so widely throughout her life, in the company of her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was exceptionally good at making friends, and she maintained many friendships from earliest childhood throughout her whole life.
