Mary Mortensen, 74, of Ashland passed away January 10th at the Metrowest Medical Center in Natick. Born in Natick, she was the daughter of Agnes (McIntyre) Penney and the late Richard J. Penney. Mary was the wife of the late Rayburn C. Mortensen who died in 2007. Mary worked as an LPN at Sudbury Pines Extended Care and the Framingham Board of Health. A resident of Ashland for 52 years, she was active in the Ashland community serving on the Ashland Board of Health for over 30 years, helping to create the Ashland Emergency Fund and A.F.D.A. Bingo, member of the Greater Ashland Lions Club, as well as being the first female call firefighter with the Ashland Fire Department.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters: Mary Ann Glaser and her husband Scott of Wake Forest, NC, Susan Robie and her husband Keith of Ashland; one son, Ronald Mortensen and his wife Diane of Ashland; two sisters; Nancy MacMillan and Donna McKenna, both of Hopkinton; one brother; Richard Penney Jr. of Hopkinton; and seven grandchildren; Rebecca O'Dette, Dillon Glaser, Nicole Glaser, Ryan Robie, Curtis Robie,
Travis Robie, and Hunter Robie. She was the mother of the late Rayburn C. Mortensen Jr.
A funeral service will be held Monday Jan. 15th at 10:00am in the Chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. Ashland with burial to follow in Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2:00-5:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Ashland Ambulance Fund, 70 Cedar St. Ashland, MA 01721
