Mary E. Bassett, 94, of Ashland, passed away, Tuesday, March 21, 2006; at the Overlook Masonic Health Center in Charlton. Born in Port Hood, Nova Scotia; she was the daughter of the late John and Eliza (Smith) McNeil. She was the wife of the late Charles H. Bassett. Mrs. Bassett grew up in Framingham and graduated from Framingham High School Class of 1929. She worked as a secretary for Telechron Co., later General Electric in Ashland, and Prudential Insurance Co. in Framingham. Mary ran the Historical House Kindergarten for 15 years with her partner Lorana Tibbetts. She was a member of the Ashland Federated Church; sung in their choir, taught Sunday School, was director of the church thrift shop, and was a past president and secretary of the Phi Delta woman's group. She helped stock the Ashland Town Hall food pantry as well as "A Place to Turn" in Natick. She was a member of the "Friends of the Library" in Ashland. She is survived by one son, Charles H. Bassett, Jr; of Ashland; one daughter, Jane Buck of Natick; four grandchildren: Sarah Gurney, Chuck Bassett, Justin Buck, and Randy Buck; three great-grandchildren: Gianna Buck, and Cameron and Jessica Bassett, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 23, 2006 at 4:00 PM in the Chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. in Ashland. There are no calling hours.
