Obituary

Marguerite F. (Derosier Starr) Eckles, 74, of Ashland MA passed Tuesday August 15, 2011 in her home from complications of uterine cancer. Born December 17, 1936 in Brockton MA, Maggie attended the Sacred Heart School and graduated from Brockton High School. Her sisters are Suzanne Tatarczuk and Mary Martha Soloman (d. 2011). She was a graduate of Northeastern University where she received multiple honors including being the first female Class President. Marguerite continued to support the University throughout her life, and in 2009 celebrated the 50th reunion of the Class of 1959; two of her grandchildren are current students of NEU. As a coop student and later as an employee, Marguerite joined a team of researchers at Avco Manufacturing Corporation where she programmed algorithms for the planned Mars landings which are still used today. Her career included positions in engineering at General Electric as well as 20 years as a Programmer/Analyst at Wellesley College. Marguerite married Richard Hutter Starr (d. 1968) and they had two children, Laura Starr-Houghton (Weare, NH) and Brian Starr (Easton MA). Following Starr's death, she married Geoffrey Eckles (d. 1990) who's children Steven Eckles (Sherborn, MA), Susan Timm (Minneapolis, MN) and Kathleen Eckles (Mexico) also mourn her passing. They lived in Dover, MA where she became a supporter of the arts, especially the Dover Foundation, through which she will be remembered for her many acting, singing and administrative roles. Marguerite and Geoffrey also loved their home in Tuftonboro, NH on Lake Winnipesaukee. Marguerite spent many summers since Geoffrey's passing on the Lake with her children and grandchildren (Richard Starr, Connor Houghton, Reid Starr and Monica Houghton) as well as her extended family and many friends, she looked forward to the annual events that brought everyone together. Known as Auntie Margy to her close family, she will be missed especially by her nieces, Mimi Lally (Canton, MA) and Kathleen Clapp (Tewksbury, MA). We will gather at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Dover for calling hours on Sunday evening August 21st, 5 PM - 7 PM. Funeral Service will be held Monday August 22nd at 2PM at St. Dunstan's.
