Obituary

Malcolm D. Soll, 56, of Ashland, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at home surrounded by his family. He had been ill in recent months. He was the beloved husband of Grace (Mastroianni) Soll, to whom he was married for 32 years. He was also a father to three children, Andrea Soll Benoit, 26, Robert Soll, 24, and Dan Soll, 16. He was a father-in-law to Michael Benoit, 27. An Ashland resident for 18 years, he was born in London, England, and emigrated to the United States at 10 years old. He lived on Long Island, New York, for 30 years. Mr. Soll was known to many as "Austin of Boston," or Austin Davis, as he was a successful and well-known radio personality in the Boston and Worcester areas for many years. He was the morning and afternoon voice of Oldies 103.3 for 11 years, and connected with millions of listeners over that time. Most recently, he hosted the morning show for WSRS 96.1 in Worcester for 7 years, and also lent his voice to B101.1 in Providence and 105.7 WROR in Boston. A proud Ashland resident, he participated in Ashland Day celebrations as a guest reporter. He was involved with the Ashland cable channel, WACA, for which he voiced commentary for the Boston Marathon. He was the brother of Gloria (Soll) Hoffman and brother-in-law to Butch Hoffman. He was the son of Leopold and Pearl Soll. He is also survived by Gaetana Mastroianni, his mother-in-law, many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, as well as nieces and nephews living around the country from New York to Florida to California, and by cousins in England and Spain. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Matarese Funeral Home in Ashland. A memorial service will take place on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at Matarese Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Wildwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the Soll family is requesting that gifts be directed to a scholarship fund for Mr. Soll's youngest son's education.
