ASHLAND – Malcolm R. Smart, 85, formerly of Wellesley, MA died January 4, 2019 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.
He was the beloved husband of Alice M. (Leheny) Smart for 62 years. Born September 17, 1933, in Danbury, CT, he was the son of the late Stewart and Gertrude (Greisiger) Smart and the younger brother of the late Stewart Smart.
Malcolm graduated from Danbury H.S. class of '51 and University of CT, class of '56 with a degree in Molecular Biology. After graduation, he married Alice, joined the Army and was assigned to Walter Reed Army Hospital as a research assistant.
After the Army, he and Alice moved to Massachusetts where he worked at Harvard University and Mass General Hospital in the research labs. He was very active in the Town of Wellesley raising his sons, participating in sports, scouting and community activities. After retiring, he and Alice moved to Ashland and was an active member of the town, volunteering on the Earth Day Program, the Ashland Senior Center, monitoring Nyanza cleanup activities and was a founding member of the Ashland Medical Reserve Corp. He especially enjoyed putting his science skills to work as a member of the Ashland Board of Health.
Over the years, Malcolm enjoyed "puttering" around the house, hunting, fishing, his dogs and traveling the world with Alice. Among his favorite places to visit were the British Isles.
In addition to his wife Alice, he is survived by his 3 sons: Larry and his wife Vanessa, Gregory and his wife Lela, Jeffrey and his wife Angela; grandchildren; Jamie, Clint, Tom, Andrew, Adriane, Kyle and John Smart; great grandchildren, Addison and Evans Smart and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Monday Jan. 7 th at 10:00am in the Chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. Ashland, MA with burial to follow in Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland. Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2:00-4:00 PM in the funeral home.
