Obituary

John Lewis Nimmo, 82, of Medway, formerly a longtime resident of Natick, died Wed. Dec. 3rd after a hard fought battle with cancer. He was born June 23rd, 1932 at home in Dyres Gate in the Point section of Newport, Rhode Island. He graduated from Roger's High School in 1950 and attended Rhode Island State College (now URI) for two years. He joined the U.S. Air Force in August of 1952 to serve his country honorably during the Korean Conflict. He attended Radio Repairman School at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. In February 1954, he was assigned to NATO headquarters in Fountainbleau, France where he was a member of the 5th Radio Relay Squadron and performed site duty in France and Germany during the war. Upon discharge from the Air Force in 1956, he returned to the University of Rhode Island (URI) to finish his college studies. In February of 1957, he met Carol Ann Smith. In August of 1957 they were married. He was the husband of Carol (Smith) Nimmo until his passing, married for 57 years. In 1959, John graduated from URI with a degree in mathematics and was hired by Sylvania Electric Products in Needham to work as a Systems Engineer. Sylvania was bought out by GTE in 1961 and John worked there as a computer programmer analyst until 1967. During that time he worked on the BMEWS, Minuteman and other Government Systems. He finished his career in Systems Engineering working with General Dynamics in Needham. John was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He watched all of the 2014 World Series games between the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals with great anticipation and pleasure. His hobbies included solving the crossword puzzle in the daily newspaper, clock making, gardening, reading and wood working. Being of Scottish descent, he especially loved to listen to "Scotland the Brave" being played on the bagpipes. He was an excellent dancer and an extremely intelligent man. His family will forever remember him as a man of great dignity and be proud of the exceptional bravery and strength of character he showed when faced with his illness. John never complained throughout over a year and a half fighting cancer and he remained an eternal optimist and jokester until the end. He died at his home in Medway, MA...just the way he wanted it. He didn't want to go and he told us all not to ever say he went peacefully. He fought until the end. In addition to his wife Carol Nimmo; he is survived by four daughters; Cynthia O'Brien of Eldersburg, MD; Dona Walkup of Ashland; Linda Nimmo Horwitz of Medfield; and Susan Murphy of Holliston. He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren: Emily Walkup of Ashland,MA; Patrick O'Brien of Eldersburg, MD; Brandon O'Brien of Bozeman, MT; Rachel Horwitz of Medfield, MA; Ryan Horwitz of Medfield, MA; Shannen Murphy of Holliston, MA and Lauren Murphy of Holliston, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Dec. 10th at 9:00am in St. Cecilia's Church, 54 Esty St. in Ashland with burial to follow in Dell Park Cemetery in Natick. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 PM in the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. in Ashland. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital PO Box 1893 Memphis, TN 38101-9950 (www.stjude.org) . His family chose this charity because he often commented that, when he got to Heaven, the first question he was going to ask was why children had to die from cancer. Rest in Peace. We love you and will miss you more than words can ever say.
