John Henderson, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret) passed away peacefully on October 29 surrounded by three generations of loving family. Born in Weston, MA, he was the son of the late William J. and Nellie M. (Kalloch) Henderson. He was also predeceased by his sister Barbara and his brothers Donald, Robert, Alden, Richard and Douglas. He graduated from Weston High School, Western California Aero Tech and attended George Washington University. In WWII, John joined the Army and became a bomber pilot with the 14th Air Corps Flying Tigers. While serving primarily in China he was wounded twice, receiving two Purple Hearts. He was also awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross and was one of only 80 to receive Chinese wings. After the war, Henderson served for 20 years in the Air Force Reserves, rising to the rank of Lt. Col. Following the war, John returned home to marry his high school sweetheart, Virginia P. Gammons, to whom he was happily married for 65 years. He said marrying "Jini" was the smartest thing he ever did. For most of his career John was a carpenter working for Smith & Snow Construction of Framingham. He was an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and the Boy Scouts of America, Algonquin Council, for many years. More recently he enjoyed the activities of the Ashland Senior Center where he bowled and he and Jini played bridge regularly. However, he was rarely happier than when in his garden feeding the birds, tending vegetables and growing his beloved dahlias. John is survived by his wife, Virginia, his six children Kathleen (Rich Abate,) John, Jr. (Sheryl Spencer,) David (Wesley Pippenger,) Laurel (supported by Patrick Cole and Bob Imhof,) Matthew (Beverly Walkup) and Beth (Julie Prescott.) He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 4.95 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
