Obituary

John Marshall Gillin, Born in Bangor Maine Nov. 2nd 1923, passed away with his family at his side on June 20th after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Perrott) Gillin who passed in 2003. John attended the U.S. Naval Academy, Bard College and graduated with a degree in Science from Columbia University. John worked as an environmental engineer at Raytheon for 25 years before retiring in 1981. He served his country honorably with the Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Crossley. He enjoyed tennis, basketball and spending his summer vacations with his girls at GreenHabor Beach. After his retirement he & Mary spent many years sailing around the New England Coast with their sailing group. Before his illness he enjoyed sitting on his deck watching the sunset over the Duxbury marsh, entertaining family and friends, volunteering at the senior center and partaking in the 5 o'clock cocktail hour. John was the devoted father of four daughters: Laura Thompson and her husband John of Douglassville, PA; Dorothy Gottardi and her husband Curt of Virginia Beach, VA; Katherine Kinney and her husband Philip of Franklin, MA and Emilie Connors and her husband Tom of Ashland, MA; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Thursday June 25th at 6:00 PM in the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. in Ashland. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4-6 PM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to VNA Care Hospice, 254 2nd Street, Needham, MA 02494.
