Obituary

John "Jack" Dwyer, 83, of Lexington died on October 4, 2018, in Needham.

Born on July 17, 1935, which he self-declared as the greatest day for America, he was the son of the late John and Mary Dwyer. He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mary Anne (O'Connor) Dwyer.

He was proud to have been raised in South Boston (which he always called "home") and lived in Watertown before making Lexington his home in 1966.

He was a graduate of Boston College where he earned his degree in mathematics. He loved his Alma Mater and stayed actively involved by working as a statistician for the football team for 50 years, as well as the men's basketball team, and was the clock operator for the men's ice hockey team.

For the past four years he was enjoying retirement in Hopkinton. In his career, he worked for New England Wheels/JSC Transportation for 30 years, owned a restaurant in Littleton for several years, and was a math teacher, house master, and swim coach at Lexington High School for 17 years.

Jack had a bright smile with a great sense of humor and could tell a story like nobody else. He enjoyed all social activities, especially if it involved his children and grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan, faithful to all of the New England pro teams, in tune with players' statistics and "stories behind the stories". He was an active member of the Lexington Golf Club for several decades. Reading and music were some of his other favorites and he had a lovely singing voice.

He is survived by his four children, Dr. J. Michael Dwyer of Corpus Christi, TX, David Dwyer of San Francisco, CA, Suzanne Rahall and her husband Bill of Mashpee, MA and Kate Thompson and her husband Rene of Ashland, MA, brothers and sisters, Rosemary Darling, Eleanor Barry, Philip Dwyer, Jane Rutstein and grandchildren Lucas, Andrea, Camilla, Kendra, Nick, Vanessa and Kianna. He is also survived by many in-laws, cousins and nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Robert Dwyer and his "third daughter" Rudy McCarthy.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday Oct. 13 th at 9:00am in St. Mary's Parish, 8 Church St. Holliston, MA.  To honor his wishes, there will be no visiting hours. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to the Tippett Hospice Home. The care he received there was absolutely remarkable and deeply appreciated by his family. Gifts may be made to Tippett Hospice Home in memory of Jack Dwyer to VNA Care, Fund Development, 199 Rosewood Drive, Suite 180, Danvers, MA 01923 or online at wwwvnacare.org.
