João “John” Aires, 67, of Ashland, MA passed away peacefully on Sept. 16, 2026 at Massachusetts General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Mairos, Portugal, on June 24, 1959, he immigrated to the United States in 1980 at the age 21 in search of the American Dream and worked long hours for many years at Framingham Baking Company, General Motors, and International Paper to support his family. A true outdoorsman, he could be found fishing in the summer, hunting pheasant and deer in autumn, and meticulously tending his wood burning stove in winter.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Ermelinda, his daughters Liliana of Ashland, Nadia (Matthew) of Natick, and his two grandchildren, Lucas and Noelle, with whom he loved spending time. John is also survived by his two sisters Joaquina A. Morais of Chaves, Portugal and Berta A. Penso of Mairos, Portugal along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his older brother Antonio Pires Aires
He will be remembered for his gentle nature, interest in current events, willingness to help loved ones with any task, passion for Portuguese soccer, unbeatability at Sueca, and love of a home-cooked meal eaten with his family.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate a Mass of Catholic Burial Friday Sept. 18th at 11:00am in St. Cecilia’s Parish, 54 Esty St. Ashland, MA with burial to follow in Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland. There are no calling hours.
