Obituary

Framingham - James Joseph (Joe) Sweeney, 92, a life-long resident of Framingham and husband of his beloved wife Catherine (Kay) Moran Sweeney, died peacefully after a brief illness Sunday evening, January 25th at Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick. He was born In Framingham August 3, 1916 and was the son of the late James Timothy Sweeney and Nora Higgins Sweeney. Joe Sweeney started his career as a glazier, but when World War II began in 1941, he was working part-time for the Boston and Albany railroad. His job on the railroad was federalized because it supported Boston's role as a port in the war effort. At the end of the war until his retirement, Joe continued to work for the railroad. Throughout his life, he loved working with glass and was the family's "go-to" guy for window repairs, table tops, etc. He also loved fashioning pendants, lamp shades and other paraphernalia in stained glass. He was famous within the family for his soliloquy when working his way through these efforts step by step. He passed the trait to his sons and grandsons, who uniformly employ this when working their way through tasks, albeit some silently, to the merriment of family members who of course know the origin. In addition to volunteering at Danforth Museum, his favorite pastime later in life was sitting on a bench at his home by the Sudbury River, and watching the river roll by. In addition to his beloved wife Kay, Joe leaves seven children: James Sweeney and his wife Susanne of Ashland; Peter Sweeney and his wife MaryJane of New Ringgold, Pennsylvania; Catherine McCool of Princeton, New Jersey; Paul Sweeney of Framingham; Christine Pepin and her husband Jerome of Melbourne Beach, Florida; Timothy Sweeney and his wife Debra of Milford; and Maryjane McEwen and her husband James of Cary, North Carolina. He was also blessed with twelve grand children and ten great grand children. Visiting hours are on Thursday, Jan. 29, 5:00 to 8:00 pm at John Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main Street, Ashland.
