Obituary

James Duich, born on June 11, 1956, in Newark, New Jersey, passed away unexpectedly on January 25th, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity. Though he was born in Newark, he considered Palatine, Illinois, his childhood home.

James graduated from William Fremd High School, class of 1974, and always looked forward to his high school reunions, where he had the opportunity to reconnect with some of his lifelong friends.

From an early age, James was a standout athlete, with ice hockey as his greatest passion. Throughout high school, he distinguished himself on the ice, earning recognition for his exceptional skill and determination. He continued his hockey career at Harper Junior College, where he was the team's leading scorer, known for his incredible slapshot. His performances frequently landed him in the local newspaper, showcasing his talent and contributions to the team. James later took his passion for hockey to St. Norbert College in Wisconsin, further solidifying his reputation as a formidable player.

With a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, James built a successful career in sales and management, holding leadership roles at Motorola, Schlumberger, Diagnosys Test Systems, and finally Astronics, where he retired as Senior Director of Transit Sales. His dedication and expertise left a lasting impact on the industry and those he worked with.

James was known for his generosity and kindness, always giving back to others. He donated to charities and supported fundraisers, often in the name of his cherished Black Labrador and best friend of nearly sixteen years, Scooter-Pie. When his sister Amy wished to attend the Masters before she passed, he secured tickets with a heartfelt letter to Augusta, making her dream come true. Whether offering financial help, encouragement, or a helping hand, James gave selflessly, embodying true generosity.

Outside of work, James was the life of the party—his infectious humor, quick wit, and boundless energy brightened every room he entered. He was an avid golfer and ice hockey player, even as an adult, always bringing his competitive spirit and camaraderie to the game. As captain and coach of The Big Dogs, his adult league hockey team, he led them to victory in the league championship, a triumph that he and his teammates celebrated with pride. James was also a member of Marlborough Country Club for over thirty-five years, where you could find him nearly every weekend that the course was open. He fulfilled any golfer's dream, playing iconic courses like Augusta National and St. Andrews, and even teeing off with pro John Daly—an unforgettable highlight of his passion for the game..

James is survived by his beloved daughter, Maggie Duich, and wife of twenty years, Cynthia Butler, who will forever cherish the memories they shared. He also leaves behind his siblings, Jack Duich, Sally Duich, Jan Duich, Tracie Duich, and  Steve Duich. He now joins his sister, Amy Duich, his parents, and his treasured dogs in heaven.

James's warmth, generosity, and larger-than-life presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of calling him family and friend.
