Obituary

George J. Martin, 85, of Westborough, passed away, Thursday, March 24th at the Metrowest Medical Center in Framingham. Born in Salem, MA; he was the son of the late Adelard and Alice (Dube) Martin. He was the loving husband of the late Louise (Judge) Martin, who died in January. They were married 55 years. George was a spirited young man with great ambition and a fearless love of adventure. He volunteered and served in the Navy on the USS Tekesta as a radioman and later took the assignment of helmet diver doing recovery missions in the China Sea. George honorably served his country for seven years during WWII and the Korean War receiving several meritorious metals for his service. Mr. Martin went on to receive his degree in accounting from Northeastern University and established a well respected accounting practice in the Framingham area. He was smart, direct, and ahead of time, using automated systems long before computers were easily available. George was actively involved as a board member and treasurer of the Boston Athletic Association. He became a BAA member in 1981 and was elected to the board as treasurer in 1985. He served in that position until his retirement in 2010. He was an important part of the new BAA management team that helped to revive and restore the BAA and Boston Marathon to financial stability and prominence in the world of sport, including the establishment of equal prize money for men and woman. George J. was a man of quick wit, an engaging smile, and blue eyes that lit up a room. He is survived by four children: Marie Louise McGah and her husband David McGah Jr. of Wilmington; Alice Mary Smith and her husband Donald of Northbridge; George F. Martin and his wife Diane of Framingham; and Carl Robert Martin and his wife Kelley of Ashland; six grandchildren; Donna and Diane Smith, Chelsea, Sarah, and Dillon Martin, and Sean McGah; two brothers; Paul Martin of Stoughton, and Robert G. Martin of Moultonborough, NH; and two sisters; Rita Jean and Doris St. Pierre, both of Salem.
