Elsie Mabel Ludwick/ Haynes/Smith passed away July 23, 2011 at home with family following a short illness. Caring Services were provided by Metrowest Homecare and Hospice. Born March 1, 1919 in Newton, MA to Edith Mary Bray and Wilfred Collins of Marlow, England, Elsie traveled extensively during her life. Her favourite early memory was of Prince Edward Island and the family farm she lived on with her mother and stepfather George Turner. She was a recognized artist and studied under the late Roger Curtis of Rockport, MA and taught art classes at her Holliston studio. She also worked at Raytheon and 3C and was a part of the work force that developed parts for the Mars Project. She was a full Member of the Framingham Artists Guild and a Charter Member of the first Danforth Museum Council of Framingham, MA in 1974. Elsie married Alexander Samuel Smith and lived in Grand Bend Ontario, Canada from 1993 - 2009 where she continued to paint and was a very active volunteer with the Grand Bend Adult Day Health Senior Program and enjoyed participating in her local Book Club. While in Canada, Elsie participated in two Mission trips to the Dominican Republic with MM1. She was a long time member of the Knox Presbyterian Church in Thedford, Ontario. A service will be held there in her memory on Sunday, October 2, 2011. Elsie survived three husbands; Frank J. Ludwick, Sr. and Marion "Murph" Haynes of Massachusetts, and Alexander Samuel Smith of Canada. She leaves her sons, Francis Ludwick and his wife, Rochelle of Framingham, MA and Robert Ludwick of Olalla, WA. A grandson, Martin Ludwick of Milford, MA, a granddaughter, Lori Aest, her husband, Greg and two great grandchildren Max and Alexie of Gig Harbor, WA. Also, her sister Ruth and husband Loring Lovewell of Holliston, Ma and many nieces and nephews. Elsie's extended family includes her step grandchildren, James and Tracy Norris of Mendon, MA, Michelle and Robert Quinn of Holliston, Robert Martin of Portland, ME, Kyle Martin of Rochester, New York and great grandchildren. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will take place on Sunday, August 21, 2011 at 3 PM at Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. in Ashland, MA for friends and family.
