Obituary

Elsie A Guyer, age 104, a respected educator and longstanding member of the Tewksbury, MA community, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students and residents through her dedication and service.

Born on January 20, 1921, she was the beloved daughter of Mary (Shaw) and Albert Johnson. Elsie graduated from Lowell High School and earned a Business Education degree from Salem State University in 1942. Her first teaching assignment was at Ashby High School in Ashby, MA, followed by positions at Lowell Commercial College and Rogers Hall in Lowell, MA where she instructed students from around the world.

Elsie settled in Tewksbury, MA with her husband Frank C. Guyer Jr. in 1948. She began teaching at Tewksbury Memorial High School in 1956 and remained there until her retirement in 1980. She taught English and business subjects and eventually served as Chairperson of the Business Department.

Elsie dedicated her life to her family and community. She was a devoted wife of 68 years to the late Frank C. Guyer Jr. who served in World War II.   She is survived by her sons, Carl C. Guyer and his wife Janice of Southborough, MA, and Eric C. Guyer and his wife Deborah of Dover, MA,  her grandchildren, Emily A. Guyer and her husband David Belding of Shoreline, WA, and Brittany L. Guyer and her husband Ian M. Irvine of New York, NY, as well as her great grandchildren Ingrid A. and James M. Irvine. Elsie was predeceased by her sisters Florence (Johnson) (Allen) Johnston and Martha Gloria (Johnson) Williams.

A communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Lowell, Elsie maintained close relationships with her neighbors on Trull Road in Tewksbury, MA and cared for the family home there until she reached 100 years of age. Her final years were spent at Valley Farm Senior Residence in Ashland, MA.

For her immediate and extended family, Elsie was an institution, offering wise counsel in good times and bad. She sustained close friendships with many of her fellow teachers long after retirement and, with her business acumen, helped family members and colleagues navigate career and life challenges.
