Elizabeth Gates Shuter, age 88, passed away on May 2, 2018 of natural causes.  She was resting comfortably at her home in Framingham, Massachusetts. Elizabeth "Liz" Gates was born on June 3, 1929 in Oneida, New York to her parents Elwood and Mae (Wentzel) Gates. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan and had a master's degree in Finance from Boston University.  Liz worked for the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company for 35 years. Liz lived in Boston, then Rockport, MA. She moved to Ashland, MA when she married Charles E. "Chick" Shuter in 1977. She later moved to Framingham, MA. Liz was a member of the Baptist branch of the Federated Church in Ashland, where she served as a deacon. She enjoyed singing in the choir and volunteering for church projects and needs. Liz and husband Chick were avid pistol collectors, and members of the Ashland Fish & Game Pistol Club where they enjoyed target meets. In the United States Revolver Association, they became active in scoring targets for pistol matches, and helped with the USRA publication. They were also members of the NRA.  Liz and Chick joined the Smith & Wesson Collectors Association. Liz eventually accumulated and was happy to display a wonderful collection of Ladysmith pistols at the annual meetings. Always active, Liz was a member of the Sierra Club, and enjoyed climbing regional mountains, whitewater rafting, and downhill skiing. She played tennis into her 80's. Liz is survived by her sisters, Florence Gates Rickard of Ithaca, NY and Kathryn Gates Farrell of Sharon, MA.  Liz was pre-deceased by her husband Chick. A memorial service will be celebrated at The Federated Church of Ashland on May 19, 2018 at 1:00. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Rifle Association (check made out to The NRA Foundation, mailed to The NRA Foundation, 11250 Waples Mill Road, Fairfax, VA 22030) or the MetroWest Humane Society (check mailed to The MetroWest Humane Society, 30 Pond Street, Ashland, MA 01721).
