Elia M. "Smokey" Thouren, 76, a longtime resident of Ashland, passed away at the MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham after a period of declining health. Born in Framingham on April 17, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Nicola and Theresa (Sita) Zaffino. She worked as a "Kressgy Girl" at the former Kressgy's Department Store in Framingham, and was later employed as a secretary for Avery Dennison, the Raytheon Company, and the United Auto Workers. After her retirement, she enjoyed a new career in child care. Elia studied piano and enjoyed sewing. She was an excellent cook and had a passion for reading and traveling. She was a member of the Civil War Round Table of Greater Boston. She was a true friend and was extremely thoughtful and generous to all. She will be missed for a long time to come. Mrs. Thouren is survived by a son, Scott Thouren, and a daughter, Lisa Thouren, both of Ashland; three brothers: Dom Zaffino and Richard Zaffino of Framingham, and Nicky Zaffino of Dennis, MA; and three sisters: Elena Davies and Lydia Dumas of Framingham, Elaine Zaffino of Virginia, and Olga Bartels of Florida. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and many dear friends. A Funeral service will be held, Friday, Nov. 21st at 11:00am in the Chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home (www.mataresefuneral.com) 325 Main St. in Ashland.
