Earl C Davis of Sherborn and Hopkinton 1933 - 2025
On June 3, 2025, Earl C Davis of Sherborn and Hopkinton passed away. He was 91.
Earl was born in Pittsburgh PA, and grew up in the town of Coraopolis. After graduating from Moon Township High, Earl went to Penn State University. There he joined the Lamda Chi fraternity, and studied art and design. There he also started his life long love affair with Penn State college football.
Earl later joined the army, where he hoped to utilize the GI Bill to further his education. He served as a military police officer in the armor division at Fort Knox in Kentucky. He told his family "I guarded the gold." He used his art and sign painting talents to make novelty lawn signs, with the names of the commanding officers, to display in front of their homes. These were in very high demand among the officers. He remained in the reserve for an additional 10 years.
After his discharge from service, he returned to Pittsburgh, where he reconnected with his childhood friend, Judy Craig. They later married and raised 3 children.
Earl started working for Westinghouse in their broadcast division. He started at KDKA television in Pittsburgh, as director of advertising and promotions. After a few short years he transferred to WJZ-13 TV in Baltimore, and WNAC in Boston. In the mid 1980s he started his own company, LogoMotion Inc, which created animated logos and graphics for advertising, news graphics, and movie theater trailers. Notable examples are the channel 7 news graphics, WBCN Radio, and the SNL John Belushi tribute.
In the early 1970s he moved to Sherborn, where he lived for 50 years. He used his art and design skills for the Sherborn "Yacht" Club and The Sherborn Players. He was a devoted member of the Unitarian Universalist First Parish Church in Sherborn.
He will be remembered for his kindness, sweet nature, and generosity. During holidays, the home was always filled with people who didn't have family to celebrate with, and he always had a smile and a joke ready for anyone who needed one. He once said, "you may not always be able to make the world a better place, but you can try like hell to not make it worse"
He is survived by his son John and his partner Katherine, his daughter Leah and her partner Laura, and his son Jeffrey and his partner Lauren.
On Saturday September 13 there will be a private burial at Pine Hill Cemetery in Sherborn, followed at 11 AM by a Celebration of Life at the First Parish UUAC Church, 11 Washington St. Sherborn, MA. The service will be streamed live at UUAC.org
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society .
