Obituary

Donald W. MacKenzie of Milford, MA died peacefully at home on Sunday March 13, 2011 after a long illness. A native of Brookline, MA and a graduate of Brookline High School, he was the son of the late Marjorie Ward (Strain) of Brookline and the late Alexander MacKenzie of Hingham, MA. Don enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Wiesbaden Germany, where he trained as an Airborne Radar Operator. When he returned to the US, he was assigned to the cockpit crew of the elite Air/Sea Rescue unit of Strategic Air Command headquartered in Omaha Nebraska. During his five years in the military, Don flew all over the world with General Curtis LaMay, founder of the Strategic Air Command. He was also stationed briefly in Alaska before returning to civilian life. Following his assignment in the Air Force, Don worked for Eastern Airlines, and then joined the staff of the Boston Symphony Orchestra where he was Operations Manager of Symphony Hall for nearly 20 years. As a senior manager with the Symphony, Don travelled with the orchestra, was in charge of the daily operations of Symphony Hall, managed the booking of Symphony Hall, and supervised a large staff of stage and house crews. He was also responsible for the popular artist concert series in both Boston, and at Tanglewood, the orchestra's summer home in the Berkshires. More recently, Don was semi-retired and spent 17 years as Assistant Director of the Wellesley Community Center in Wellesley, MA before fully retiring in 2008. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jean M. MacKenzie of Milford, and his four children: Gary W. MacKenzie and his wife Susan of Barnstable; Glenn S. MacKenzie and his wife MaryAnn of Centerville; Gayle Cotter and her husband Ned of Mashpee and Gerilyn Fogarty and her husband Terence of Plymouth. Don leaves 10 grandchildren: Stephanie MacKenzie, Andrea Fullam and her husband Mike, Kristen MacKenzie, Scott MacKenzie and his wife Sarah, Kristina, Katelyn, and Jennifer Cotter; MacKenzie, Kayla and Shannon Fogarty and two great grandsons, Connor and Benjamin Fullam. He is also survived by his first wife, Fay Semple of Plymouth, two sisters, June Black of Rhode Island, Joan Marsh of Toledo Ohio and two brothers, Owen Ward of Wellfleet and Alan Ward of Framingham. Don was predeceased by a sister Diane Ward and a brother, Richard MacKenzie. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held on noon on Friday March 18, 2011 in the chapel at Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main Street, Ashland, MA. A reception will follow at the Chateau Restaurant in Westborough. Mr. MacKenzie will be interred at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne Massachusetts at a later date. Burial services will be private.
