Donald Francis
Krier
Oct 29, 1933 — Jun 30, 2024
Framingham
On June 30, 2024, Donald Francis Krier, 90, died peacefully at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital with his wife by his side and his family surrounding him for many days.
Donald was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 29, 1933 to Odelia and Paul Krier. He attended Pius XI High School, Marquette University, and the University of Chicago before starting a career teaching economics that spanned over 45 years. He started his teaching career at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York in 1959. Donald completed his PhD at Boston College in 1968 and became a professor of economics at Newton College of the Sacred Heart in Newton, Massachusetts. In 1973, Donald joined the faculty of Framingham State College in Framingham, Massachusetts.
Donald met his beloved wife, Mary Maureen (Donohue) of Montreal, Quebec, in graduate school at Marquette University. They were married at the Church of the Gesu, the Jesuit parish in Milwaukee, on December 27, 1958. They raised five children, all boys, starting in Olean, New York, then Watertown, Massachusetts, and ultimately settling in Newton, Massachusetts.
Donald had many interests and hobbies, including traveling and reading, but above all was his appreciation for fine art. Donald enjoyed learning about many different artists. He had a particular interest in the work of Charles H. Woodbury and was often c onsulted by galleries and other institutions for his research and vast knowledge of the artist.
Donald held a special place in the heart of those who knew him. He kept a relatively small group of close friends who enjoyed discussions of books, art, politics, and updates on family and friends. He was a brilliant man who was enjoyable to be around because conversations were always very interesting and included much laughter given his quick wit and character. But the lasting impression was his kindness and his humility. This wonderful combination of qualities will be sorely missed by Donald's family and friends.
Donald is predeceased by his parents, Paul Francis and Odelia, and his son, Patrick Donohue. He is survived by his wife, Maureen; his sons (and their wives), Donald Francis II (Mashelle), Paul Francis, Robert Louis (Mimi), and Joseph Thomas (Korey); his grandchildren (and their spouses), Rebecca Louise (Lucas), Sean Patrick (Gretchen), Nicholas Paul (Emylee), Colin Patrick (Alice), Isaac Andrew, Sarah Byrne, Justin Patrick, Hannah Leigh; and his great-grandchildren, Otto Yager and Ellis Edstrom.
A funeral mass will be held at 10am on Tuesday, July 9th, 2024 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Southborough, Massachusetts. A private burial will take place after the mass at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Sherborn, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations of any size to be made to the St. Francis Breadline in NYC (stfrancisbreadline.org ), or the MSPCA in Boston (mspca.org).
The family would like to thank the wonderful group of people who have helped care for Donald over the past few months including the doctors, nurses, and Palliative Care team at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Donald's primary care doctor, Dr. Charles Pao, and Donald's caregivers, Geneva, Ameila, and Daniella. Finally, words cannot adequately describe the gratitude the family feels for a person who herself cannot be adequately described: thank you, Kay Murphy, for your tremendous support and for your 70+ year friendship.
