Charles D Thomas, Jr. ("Tom"), 80, of Ashland, died peacefully at Oak Knoll Healthcare Center in Framingham on March 26, after a long illness. Born in Buckhannon, WV, he was the son of the late Charles D. Thomas. Sr., and Ada Zickefoose Thomas of Morgantown, WV.
He received a BA, MA and PhD in Physics from West Virginia University, and spent many successful years in the nuclear industry at Yankee Atomic Electric Company and Duke Energy. He was particularly excited during his career to be part of the on-site safety team at Three Mile Island after the 1979 accident, and to be a part of a fact finding team that went to the Chernobyl site several years after the nuclear accident there. He retired in 2001, and has enjoyed traveling and being with family and friends.
A man with a passion for life, friends, family and WVU football, Tom loved a good party and was the host of many. He also liked nothing better than eating some oysters by the shore, perhaps with a good scotch.
Tom leaves behind a daughter, Cynthia Thomas, and her husband, Caleb Solomon, of Boston, and a loving companion of 26 years, Ann Loven, of Framingham. He is predeceased by his brother Richard Thomas. He leaves many relatives, friends, fraternity brothers as well as several nieces and nephews of whom he was very proud.
