Charles August Rund, 90, of Westboro, died Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Beaumont Nursing Home after a period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of the late Marjorie (Parris) Rund, who died in 1961 and the late Phyllis (Hall) (Scotland) Rund who died in 2005. Mr. Rund was born August 27, 1919 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of the late Edward C. Rund and the late Virginia (Burke) (Rund) Simonsen. He graduated from Boy's Vocational School, Baltimore, Maryland in 1937. He attended Iowa State Teacher's College, Air Force Navigation School and Wentworth Institute in Boston. He served his country as a 2nd Lieutenant and Navigator with the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a Foreman and Engineering Technician for Edward A. Olsen Company in Ashland assisting in the development of a very early artificial heart/lung unit and kidney dialysis machine in the 1950's, retiring from Apahouser in Watertown in 1991 at the age of 72. Mr. Rund was also a member of the Civil Defense Agency and Auxiliary Police of Ashland during the 1950's. He was a 32nd degree Mason and long-time member and past Worshipful Master of North Star Lodge, A.F.& A.M. of Ashland and a past Patron of the Olive Branch Chapter No. 12 Order of Eastern Star. He loved the Red Sox and enjoyed seeing them win the World Series in 2004 and 2007; the last time they won was in 1918, the year before he was born. He is survived by sisters: Marion Sawyer of Maryland, Carolyn Resch and husband Frank of New Jersey, Caren Arabia of Pennsylvania; two sons: Charles A. of Ashland and Robert and wife Deborah of Medway; a daughter, Carol Colaianni of Hudson; stepsons: Stephen Scotland and wife Barbara of Arizona, Jeffery Scotland and wife Lisa of Arizona; step-daughter Robin Duby and husband Tom of Arizona; grandchildren: Andrew, Laura, Kelly and Danielle Rund of Ashland; Andrea DiRico of Florida; Benjamin, Krystal, and Katherine Rund of Medway; Denise Kastman of Wisconsin; Meredith Fioretti of Waltham; Tyler Field of Bridgewater; Alexandra and Leah Duby of Arizona; and Spencer of Texas; great-grandchildren: Owen, Sarah, Nichole, Alicia, Caitlyn, Thomas Charles, Nathan, and Jakob. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 28, from 4-7 PM at the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main Street, Ashland. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 10 AM in the Chapel of the Matarese Funeral Home with urn interment to follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Ashland.
