Obituary

Anthony Mark Smith, 64, of Medway passed away Sunday, June 4th at his home surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Anthony, more fondly known as Tony, was born to Frances Smith-McAlice and the late Herbert J. Smith on October 29, 1958 in Framingham, Massachusetts. He was artistic in his youth, teen and adult life, from playing the tuba in the marching band to taking photos for the yearbook and even helping run the lights in college productions. Tony graduated from Natick High School (Class of '76) and later helped to organize several class reunions. He graduated from WPI with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and later received his MS in Engineering Management from Tufts.

Tony met his wife Frances "Francie" (Combs) Kinsman-Smith, the love of his life, in 1985. Francie was his nurse after having an accident that put him in the hospital for several weeks. He quickly jumped into the father role for Francie's daughter, Jacqueline "Jackie". In 1986, their second daughter, Lori, was born. Tony was always involved in their girls' interests, helping run the lights and videography at their dance recitals and cheering on Lori at her soccer games and piano recitals.

Tony was always willing to help anyone who asked - especially his family. He spent many weekends fixing something at the family home in Natick and later on the house his mother still lives in down the Cape. Even after his mother remarried, he would help George (McAlice) around the house and teach him the quirks that houses tend to gain in time. Once Lori and Nathan bought their house, he was there teaching them how to change outlets/switches or cutting out counters. He continued the tradition with Jackie and Jon when they bought their house.

Tony had as he called it "many lifetimes". These were hobbies that became passions in which he truly immersed himself. The first "lifetime" was photography and it was one that endured throughout his life. It included designing and building his own dark room in his parents' basement for developing his own photographs. This passion only increased, so he began taking wedding photographs for friends of the family. His second "lifetime" began when he became interested in building things with wood. He learned to build cabinetry and several cabinets and bookcases in his house and those of his family were made by him. At about the same time, he got his pilot's license and then purchased his own plane. He was able to share this "lifetime" and for many years he would frequently take his family, especially his daughter Lori, for joy rides on weekends while Francie was working and Jackie was with her Dad. One drive home from work, he drove by a glass shop and decided to stop in. Because the girls were in college and he had more time, he started with taking a class in blown glass and so began his next "lifetime". In true Tony fashion, he progressed to teaching classes in sandblasting and fused glass. Most recently, he was interested in refurbishing watches, thinking he would continue to tinker during his retirement. And while Tony no longer took photos professionally, he always had a camera in hand documenting all family events and get-togethers.

Tony spent most of his professional career at MIT Lincoln Laboratory (MIT LL) where he worked for over 30 years. He started there as a drafter in the Engineering Division and transitioned to an Engineer staff after achieving his degree from WPI. Always looking for the next challenge, Tony began working towards a Master's degree in Engineering Management at Tufts. This prompted a transition to the Program Management Office (PMO). After several years in the PMO, he moved to the Space Systems and Technology Division where he was given the opportunity to help MIT Kavli with a new NASA program. This program called TESS launched in 2018 and it was one of his proudest achievements. After TESS launched, Tony moved into the Business Transformation office where he helped to  improve the Lab's processes and business systems. Throughout his professional career, Tony took a couple side trips to Summit Labs and DUSA Pharmaceutical Company, but he always ended back at MIT LL.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters Jacqueline Kinsman and her husband Jon Ustin of Medway and Lori Milligan and her husband Nathan of Stow; grandchildren Lilah, Sadie, and Logan; brother Herbert Smith of Stoughton; and sister Veronica Smith of Indiana.
